Bonded and child labour persist in India’s natural stone sector. As a former child labourer rescued at the age of 6, I speak with authority and experience. I know the immeasurable impacton children, their families, and communities. Generations of the same families spend their entirelife as labourers from birth until death, always remaining on the outskirts of the society without access to the social protections they need. A great many are migrant workers from within India moving to where low-skilled work can be found. Once they move to other states for work, they are not able to access education for their children, or other government support schemes. In anendeavour to make a living and feed their families, their situation is made worse.There is much work to be done on this issue domestically, but the international market fornatural stone, together with increasing global human rights due diligence legislation, presentsan opportunity for the global construction sector to shine a light on these challenges and towork towards the formalisation of the sector, the raising of standards for workers and the elimination of forced and child labour.
